Custom furniture, Upstate South Carolina
Built by hand.
Built to be
handed down.
Dan Goodman builds solid hardwood tables, beds, shelving and cabinetry one piece at a time, from lumber milled right here in the Upstate. Almost everything that leaves the shop was drawn up with the family it belongs to.

The shop
Nearly everything here is made to order.
“95% of what I do is custom and I greatly enjoy the interaction throughout the build and finishing process, sharing the joy, excitement and delivering a piece exactly how you want it.” Dan Goodman, founder
Tell Dan the room, the people and the way you live in it. He'll help you pick the species, settle the dimensions and work out the details, then build it in his Upstate shop and finish it by hand. Most of the lumber comes from local Upstate South Carolina mills or salvaged wood.

The signature detail
Look for the bow tie.
Real wood moves and real slabs crack. Instead of hiding it, Dan cuts a butterfly key (woodworkers call it a bow tie) across the split and inlays it in a contrasting species. It holds the slab together for good, and it turns a flaw into the part of the table people run their hand across.

Five steps from rough board to your dining room.
Talk it through
Call, text or send the form. Share the room, the size you have in mind and a photo or two of what you like. Dan will help you narrow it down.

Pick the lumber
Walnut, cherry, oak, maple, pine or a salvaged slab with some history. Most of it comes from local Upstate mills or salvaged lumber.

Glue-up and joinery
Boards are milled flat, glued up and clamped, then joined with methods that hold for decades: trestle wedges, Domino tenons and butterfly keys.

Finish by hand
Sanded through the grits and finished to bring the figure up. Dan keeps you in the loop through every stage of the build.

Meet the woodman
One maker. Every board.
Dan started Goodman the Woodman in 2021 as a part-time venture and it hasn't slowed down since. He designs, builds and finishes every piece himself, and keeps you in the loop the whole way through.
- Custom barn doors for a historic mill being turned into apartments.
- Another barn door build, joined with Festool Dominos.
- A church donation box model, woodworking plus 3D-printed details.
